BRICK COMPANY ENGLAND APRON
ROOF OVER BRICK KILNSConstruction being a mixture of steel and galvanized steel uprights, girder beams, H irons and I beams with concrete foundations. In all housing an extremely corrosive environment compounded with thermal shock to the substrates. The Brick Kilns during the firing of the bricks continuously emit extremely hot moist fumes of sulphur, phosperous, and nitrogen plus other acidic corrosive gases attacking all metal substrates and the surface of concrete foundations supporting the whole roof superstructure combined with the additional hazard of the brickworks being situated on a hillside with prevailing winds carrying brick dust creating a sand blasting environment attacking all painted surfaces.
The whole structure - girders - uprights - platforms and concrete foundations were in a severe state of corrosion, but due to the time factor to complete the painting contract, closing down the firing of the brick kilns was ruled out on economical grounds. Blasting back to bright metal was also eliminated, as the acidic fumes from the kilns would contaminate the blasting surface. Therefore commercial sweep blasting was recommended to remove the loose rust and old blistered paintwork followed by high pressure hosing to remove the acid contaminated deposits.
