THE INCREDIBLE CONCEPT OF NEUTRA RUSTŪ TL BARRIER

THE LABORATORY BRIEF

To produce a versatile high build, high volume solids, water borne, air driving, high performance coating that would outperform heavy-duty solvent based coatings on various substrates in the most aggressive of industrial environments.

SUBSTRATE
It is a known fact that all ferrous metals including steel, cast iron and ductile iron, if unprotected will corrode by the natural process in which iron is converted back to its naturally occurring form of iron oxide.

This can be explained as the tendency for iron to revert to its original oxide form under the influence of water and oxygen. In the eyes of the Electro-chemist, are:

Anodic negative of cell Fe-> Fe + 2e

Cathodic positive of cell H20 + 1/2 O2 + 2e -> 2OH

It is apparent therefore that corrosion would not occur if steel could be coated with a film that was completely impervious to water or to oxygen since both water and oxygen are required for corrosion reactions.

It was quite obvious that the key factors for successful long-term corrosion protection were:

PERMEABILITY - BARRIER - ADHESION - ABRASION
Numerous chemical components were originally researched. The binder chosen to produce such a unique coating formulation was a sophisticated blending by emulsion polymerization without colloids of two polymers hard and soft types.

This formula produced excellent film coalescence and with one coat, able to achieve dry film builds of up to 250microns depending on formula and colour.


PYROAURITE - Remarkable Anti-Corrosive Mineral
X-ray studies of the underside of the chloropolymer dry film revealed a remarkable discovery of a complex 'Anti-Corrosive' mineral group of Pyroaurite compounds, together with magnetite.

[M1-xR-x(OH)2]x[A--nx/nyH2O]-x

These compounds through their Electrochemical and Physical Buffering properties act as a "BARRIER" and are able to prevent the spread of localized corrosion cells if the film is damaged and the substrate exposed. i.e. no under film creep.


SURFACE PREPARATION
Two different types of standards were chosen: Swedish Standards
S.A.2.5 - profile 50 and 75m and USA SSPC. - SP6 Commercial Blast.

Also, smooth steel for the fabrication of industrial and consumer appliances, furniture, and motor car bodies.

FORMULATIONS AND SUBSTRATE TESTING
Laboratory testing to ASTM and BS standards for salt spray - humidity and weatherability of this unique coating formula immediately began to produce( incredible performances, results far beyond hitherto associated with acrylic or solvent coatings.

Various formulas producing 60/150mm DFT with one coat were tested on a wide range of substrates from blasted steel, smooth steel, galvanized steel, stainless steel, rusted steel, iron, aluminum, copper; bronze, fiberglass, PVC, masonry cement, and wood.

PERMEABILITY - Barrier Properties
Probably the most important factor is to have the ability to prevent corrosion of the metal substrate and to inhibit the passage of electron ions between the anode and cathodic sites.

The formulated polymers showed the ability to produce high electrical resistance and therefore low conductivity, essential electrical properties ensuring a highly water-resistant film.

IMPERMEABLE BARRIER - 20,000 Hours Salt Spray Resistance
A remarkable water vapour permeability of only l0-20g/25mm/m/2/ 24 hours was achieved, far superior to figures previously obtained with the best available alkyd epoxy, chlorinated rubber or acrylic styrene coating.

In addition very low permeability have been recorded for oxygen and carbon dioxide further enhancing the coatings anti-corrosive properties

Superior corrosion resistance was obtained when testing against salt-spray. Laboratory tests indicated that depending on the DFT up to 20,000 hours, salt spray resistance could certainly be obtained.
